Manhoru
Manhoru is a Japanese term, that comes from the English manhole.
In the 1980´s, the size and round shape of manhole covers became widespread in Japan, and since then each municipality has had its own way of decorating them. Today, almost 95% of towns and cities in the country have their own manhole design covers.
Walking through Ueno Park in Tokyo, with the cherry trees about to blossom, we saw the first of many manhole covers that we photographed and then drew, to finally turn them into what you see, leather coasters, to remind us that design can be in everything. And that is something the japanese certainly know a lot about.
